Aftercare Guide

How to make your spray tan last longer.

The single biggest factor in how long your tan looks flawless is what you do after I leave. This is the same aftercare advice I give every Sunkissed client — follow it and you’ll get the full ten days.

Golden Rules

Four habits that double how long your tan lasts

Moisturise daily

Oil-free, non-mineral moisturiser morning and night, starting the day after your tan.

Pat dry, never rub

After every shower, pat skin dry with a soft towel. Rubbing lifts the colour.

Cool, short showers

Hot water and long showers strip the tan faster than anything else.

Skip the exfoliator

Don’t exfoliate for the duration of the tan unless you’re prepping for a new one.

Do

  • Wear loose, dark clothing the night you tan
  • Sleep on dark sheets the first night
  • Wait at least 8 hours (or 1–4 hours for express) before rinsing the guide colour — the tan then keeps developing for another 6–8 hours
  • First rinse: lukewarm water only, no shower gel
  • Pat dry with a soft towel after every shower
  • Moisturise twice daily with an oil-free formula
  • Use a tan-extending mist or moisturiser from day three

Don't

  • Don’t shower, swim, sauna or steam for 8 hours after a standard tan
  • Don’t exercise heavily for the first 24 hours
  • Don’t use exfoliating scrubs, mitts or AHA products
  • Don’t swim in chlorine or salt water if you can avoid it
  • Don’t wax during the tan — shave instead
  • Don’t apply cocoa butter, coconut oil, retinol or vitamin C
  • Don’t take hot baths — they fade the tan rapidly

Day-by-Day

What your tan does in the week after the
appointment

00

Day 0 (tan day)

Sleep loose, sleep on dark sheets, don’t shower, don’t sweat. The cosmetic bronzer is the colour you see — the real tan is still developing underneath.

01

Day 1 (morning rinse)

Lukewarm shower, water only, no soap or scrub. Pat dry. The bronzer washes off and reveals your real tan, which keeps developing for another 24 hours.

02

Day 2

Tan is at its richest. Begin moisturising twice daily with an oil-free formula. You can shave with a fresh razor if needed.

03

Days 3–5

Wedding-day spray tan applied — Nouvatan or Sienna X bridal formula, develops in 8 hours.

04

Days 6–8

Tan starts to soften. A tan-extending mist or moisturiser keeps it looking even.

05

Days 9–10

Final fade. Exfoliate gently in the shower to lift any remaining patches before your next tan.

FAQs

Aftercare questions

How long does a spray tan last?

A professional spray tan typically lasts seven to ten days at its peak with proper aftercare, then gradually fades over the following few days. Aftercare is the single biggest factor — clients who moisturise daily and avoid long hot baths regularly get the full ten days. Clients who skip moisturiser, take very hot showers and exfoliate aggressively often see five days.

When can I shower after a spray tan?

For a standard 8-hour develop tan, wait the full 8 hours (or until the morning after) before rinsing the cosmetic bronzer off. For an express tan, you can rinse the guide colour after 1–4 hours depending on the depth you want — the longer you leave it, the deeper the starting shade. Either way, the actual tan continues to develop on your skin for another 6–8 hours after the rinse. The first shower should be lukewarm, brief, and bronzer-only (no soap, scrub or shower gel).

Can I exercise after a spray tan?

Avoid heavy exercise for the first 24 hours — sweat lifts the tan unevenly while it’s still developing. After 24 hours you can go back to normal workouts, but rinse off sweat with a quick lukewarm shower rather than letting it dry on the skin, and avoid abrasive sports gear that rubs the same area repeatedly.

Can I go swimming with a spray tan?

Chlorine and salt water are the fastest tan-stripping agents there are. Swimming will dramatically shorten your tan’s lifespan. If you have to swim, apply a thick waterproof barrier cream beforehand, rinse with fresh water immediately after, and pat dry — don’t rub.

Can I shave or wax after a spray tan?

Yes, but shave (don’t wax) and use a fresh razor with a hydrating shaving gel. Shaving lifts the very top layer of dead skin so the tan looks slightly lighter afterwards — that’s normal. Avoid waxing for the duration of the tan as it’ll strip the colour completely from the waxed area.

What moisturiser should I use?

An oil-free, non-mineral-based moisturiser is best. Avoid anything with cocoa butter, coconut oil, AHAs, retinol or vitamin C — they accelerate fade. Brands like Sienna X, Fake Bake and Nouvatan all sell tan-extending moisturisers that genuinely make a difference. Apply morning and night.
