The best spray tan for your wedding — a bride’s timing guide
The single most common question we get from brides is — “when should I have my wedding spray tan?” The honest answer is: not the day before. And not three days before either. Here’s the timing guide we send to every bride who books with us.
The non-negotiable rule
Your wedding tan should be applied two full days before the wedding. That gives the colour overnight to develop, a full day to settle, and a final morning shower to soften the bronzer and leave a natural, glowing finish.
Tan the day before and you risk:
- Bronzer transfer onto your dress
- A slightly orange undertone in early photos
- Sweat patches showing up while it’s still developing
Book a trial tan first — always
Two weeks before the wedding, book a trial. This lets us:
- Find the exact colour depth that flatters your dress, skin and venue lighting
- Test how your skin reacts to the solution
- Adjust the formula if needed
- Time how the colour develops on you specifically
A trial also doubles as a free preview for the engagement-party look or pre-wedding events. Most brides love it so much they book in monthly until the big day.
The full wedding spray tan timeline
8 weeks out
Book your wedding date with us. Bridal parties book up quickly, especially May–September.
3 weeks out
Stop any harsh exfoliating treatments, peels, retinol, microdermabrasion. Your skin needs to be in its natural state for an even, long-lasting tan.
2 weeks out
Trial tan appointment. We’ll decide on shade and finalise timings.
3 days before
Final exfoliation. Wax/shave any hair removal. Use unfragranced moisturiser daily.
2 days before
Wedding tan appointment. Develops overnight. Lukewarm shower in the morning to rinse bronzer. Pat dry.
1 day before
Tan is set. Light moisturising. Avoid hot baths, swimming, sauna. Wear loose clothing.
Wedding day
Soft, glowing, natural finish. No bronzer transfer to your dress. Photographer will love you.
What about the bridal party?
Bridesmaids, mothers and the bride can all be tanned in one visit — that’s the beauty of having a mobile spray tan service. The whole party books for the same two-days-before slot and we work through the group on arrival. See the wedding spray tanning page for full bridal-party pricing options.
What shade should I pick?
For weddings, almost always go one shade lighter than you think. White and ivory dresses make tans look noticeably darker than they do against everyday clothes. Photographer flashes also intensify colour. A natural mid-shade reads beautifully on camera and in person.
What about destination weddings?
Tan two days before you fly, not before the wedding itself. The travel, sun exposure and change in skin condition will affect the colour. Better: book a fresh tan once you’ve arrived if there’s a local tanning specialist at your destination.
One last thing
Don’t try a new tanning brand the week of your wedding. Don’t experiment with a self-tan between your trial and your final tan. Stick with what worked at the trial and you’ll wake up on your wedding morning glowing exactly the way you imagined. For the rules of the first 24 hours, see what to wear after a spray tan, and for the long view how long a spray tan lasts.
